Academy on tour!

Bromley Football Club’s academy scholars have used the close season to enjoy some of trips off site.

Last week, academy coaches Danny Mills and Glyn Shimell took a squad of players up to Liverpool to enjoy the experience of an away trip. The players travelled up on Tuesday afternoon, had an overnight stay in Widnes, and then played a game against Liverpool Football University on Wednesday morning. The young Ravens took an early lead against a team made up of second year students, and for some time, held their own. Liverpool came back with 3 goals before the Ravens replied. In an entertaining game, the final result was 6-4. Post match, the players enjoyed taking in the historic football city and visited both Anfield and Goodison Park before heading into the city centre and docks for an evening meal.

On Wednesday, a trip a bit closer to home saw the academy graduates enjoy a day out at Camber sands. The players enjoyed a light training session on the dunes and then had a BBQ lunch cooked by the coaches, before entertaining themselves with more beach games and dips into the sea.

All in all, it was an excellent couple of trips, with two great sets of players representing the Bromley badge with pride.

Some of Bromley Football Club’s Academy scholars featured in a recent Telegraph piece about the use of the controversial VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system, which has already been a hot topic of discussion at this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The interactive feature was filmed on our FIFA Quality Pro 3G pitch during the summer, and allows readers to give their opinions on a series of in game events within the footage.

Academy host Crystal Palace in pre-season friendly

The Bromley FC Academy hosted neighbours Crystal Palace at Hayes Lane on Saturday, with the young Ravens falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat.

It was a tough contest for both sides on the day in blistering conditions on the Stadium pitch. In the end, the 2017-18 Premier League Under 18 Champions Crystal Palace, secured the pre-season victory with a 1-0 win but the academy had many positives to take out of the fixture.

The result itself was of less importance on the afternoon, as it often is in pre-season, with The Ravens Academy handing out 4 debuts from players involved in the U16’s. One of the more notable performances came from Cameron Edwards, with the young goalkeeper showing huge potential and effort to keep the score at 0-1 with three excellent saves.

The other three debutants were Jamie Watson, Harry Thomas and Ollie Tanner who all stepped up to experience a taste of things to come when they begin with the academies pre-season schedule in the first week of August.

Upcoming fixtures against Millwall, Ipswich and Norwich along with many more should help prepare the young Ravens for an exciting and promising 2018-19 campaign.

The big day had arrived last week for the Bromley Football Club Academy 2nd year Scholars and in particular for Tom Hefford.

He attained a triple distinction star which is the highest award in the BTEC Sport qualification. It was great news and well received by his family and Academy Scholar players.

Tom will be fortunate enough to attend his first choice destination, which was Brighton University, and will study Sport and exercise science. He made this selection from attending the careers day in 2016 and now down to his hard work and dedication he can pursue a future in teaching or coaching in the elite environment.

Bromley’s Academy started their season on Wednesday with just a single home fixture being played at Hayes Lane. The 2nd Years played host to Whyteleafe, and the young Ravens got their season off to a superb start as they won 5-0 on the Stadium pitch.

Other impressive away performances came in from Academy sides throughout the afternoon with a 6-0 win coming against Charlton Athletic Trust and a 4-0 win against The Halley Academy!

Tough defeats came at the hands of Maplesden Noakes, with Bromley going down 7-3 to the Maidstone based school. And one of our sides faced a trip to Gravesend Grammar School and after going 3-0 down in the game, the Ravens put on a spirited comeback to score twice late on. Unfortunately that didn’t prove enough on the afternoon, as they went on to lose the match 3-2.

On the whole it was a successful week of matches for the Academy, with a number of the 1st Year sides still getting to know each other. We will provide you further updates throughout the season, with our Academy growing from strength to strength!

As ever, a huge thank you to our fantastic sponsors of the Academy; Go Travel, Life Lab, Chamber Furniture and Monster Energy Hydrate.
